As part of our ongoing initiative with Apple and Lamar University, participating educators have been asked to draft a plan for 'disruptive innovation' that will serve to enhance our learning environment.
I've spent days (perhaps more than I should've) pondering the idea of innovating my classroom environment. After a video conference call with my learning cohort (a diverse group of talented individuals that span across the country), it dawned on me that our students could be collaborating in a similar matter with not only their classmates, but students across the globe.
The world is an immense melting pot of cultures and ideas; oftentimes, individuals beyond our borders are able to see things that we otherwise may not have considered. When we are able to broaden our circle of communication, we not only learn to be mindful of one another and celebrate our differences, but we become better global citizens and problem-solvers in the process.
While this is still very much a 'work in progress', my innovation boils down to this:
By providing our students with opportunities to collaborate and communicate with students across the globe, we help foster global mindfulness and diverse problem-solving skills that could contribute to solving the world's challenges.
Given the advancements in telecommunication technology, it's now more feasible than ever to easily collaborate with individuals we never would've imagined speaking to. Perhaps the most difficult part would be to develop partnerships with schools in various counties.
As previously stated, this is an extremely rough draft, but I fully intend to elaborate and find supporting research that highlights the merits of being a conscious global citizen.
