Well, this recap has certainly been a long time coming!
A summary: Apple, Houston Community College and Lamar University have teamed up to provide a select number of Houston educators (myself included!) a grand opportunity to bring mobile app development and coding curriculum into our classrooms.
As part of our training to bring this great opportunity to our students, we first needed a bit of a crash course into what the whole program is all about: the Houston Teacher Coding Academy.
Held across five days, this event helped provide teachers with a overview of the program expectations and outcomes, as well as an opportunity for teachers of similar grade levels to receive instruction more relevant to the age groups they teach.
During our week at the academy, we were asked to form groups and create an app prototype using Apple Keynote that would help solve certain dilemmas faced by a variety of Houston-based organizations. On Friday, we were asked to present our prototypes to academy attendees as well as representatives of the organizations that brought their problems to us.
With all resources provided as well as instruction led by Apple-certified educators and employees, the entire experience was a joy to attend and be part of.
Although there's still some time before our campus begins offering coding courses, I look forward to seeing what this new venture brings and to see what will unfold!
